You may find the following glossary of terms used on this website useful.
Domain
and domain name
The general category that a computer on the internet belongs to. Examples
of high level domains are .com, .org, and .co.uk.
Your website will have
a domain name - something like yourbusiness.co.uk and a web address looking
like http://www.yourbusiness.co.uk
A domain name has to
be registered for a fee and is yours to use for a period of two years
and sometimes more. You have first priority when re-registering your expiring
domain name.
Hosting
Your website will be stored or "hosted" on a computer connected
to the internet. This host computer, or server, could be one maintained
by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), for example, or by a company
devoted to hosting websites. Some companies offer free hosting in exchange
for you allowing them to put advertisements on your site.
Internet
Service Provider - ISP
An ISP provides its members with access to the internet, e-mail and usually
some space on a computer where websites may be hosted.
Search
Engine
A website that enables internet users to find sites that provide the information
they are looking for. It is very important that your site is registered
with the main search engine sites otherwise your potential customers and
visitors will not find you. There is considerable skill in designing and
registering a website in such a way that it is easily found on the top
search engine sites. A good example of a search engine is Google.
URL
Your website address - www.yoursite.com. Stands for Uniform Resource Locator.
